    10 Percent Duty on Canadian Softwood Lumber Begins April 15

    Washington - U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of International Trade today advises the trade community that CBP will begin collecting a 10 percent duty on imports of softwood lumber from Canada beginning April 15.     Washington - U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced today fiscal year 2008 seizures totaled more than $272.7 million in counterfeit and pirated goods, a 38 percent increase in domestic value over FY 2007. (more)

    El Paso, Texas - U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers working at the El Paso port of entry arrested a Mexican national for making a claim to United States citizenship by presenting a genuine U.S. passport not issued to him. The arrest was made at the Bridge of the Americas international crossing Monday afternoon. (more)

    U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers and friends recently commemorated the 30th anniversary of the tragic death of U.S. Customs Inspector Kenneth G. Ward at the Lynden, Wash. port of entry named in his honor.Ward was killed in the line of duty at the border crossing by an escapee who had been in prison on a murder conviction. (more)

    Washington - U.S. Customs and Border Protection has posted a video on its Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative Web site to show U.S. and Canadian citizens how to benefit most from their new WHTI-compliant documents as they cross the border. Many of the new travel documents - Passport Cards, Enhanced Driver’s Licenses, and NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST cards - that comply with WHTI are embedded with radio frequency identification technology.
